Words and Numbers

Roger & Marisol Apostol
I just came back from a couples communication retreat I found on the Healthy Relationships California website.  Yip, Roger and I wanted to do this before the year was over, so we took the plunge.  One thing that stood out is that women are words and men are numbers.  You know where I'm going with this, right?

When women are asked anything, we start talking... blah, blah, blah!  When men are asked anything, their reply is "how much?" (how much is going to cost me? how much am I going to earn? how much do you need?) We, women, have the gift to talk about our emotions openly. Men, on the other hand, show their emotions by way of their innate ability to provide and protect their partner (hence all the chocolate, flowers, stuffed animals and what not when courting is taking place). When asked what makes you happy, men have very straight forward and precise answers -just like numbers. When women are asked, we are vague and mostly think of what makes the family or kids happy before we think on ourselves (naturally, we are moms!).

What's the takeaway? Women, let's talk all we want -it's our nature- but know what to ask for. And yes, we women have come a long way and have our very own earning and buying power, thank you very much!  However, let's allow our partners to express their love and appreciation towards us in the way that is natural for them. Let's not forget that spouses cannot read minds. If you want flowers every month, then ask for them... what color, what shape, and from what florist.

So, women, when your knight in shining armor asks: What do YOU want for Christmas? Don't give him hints. Be very specific!  Show then the bookmark, email them, show your man the Wink bling that you've been eyeing for so long. It will make him happy to make you happy.  Give it a try!
